How we help pets during the winter holidays, full of crackers and loud noises

First of all, during the winter holidays, when firecrackers, firecrackers and fireworks are heard everywhere, it is necessary to take safety measures. We know well that few dogs tolerate the noise they produce, which is why a very high number of losses are recorded during the holidays. Due to the loud noise, dogs get scared and try to run away. Unfortunately, some succeed. Therefore, if you have the opportunity during the holidays, take extra precautions so that the dog cannot escape from the yard (if you have an outdoor dog). During the night, especially on New Year’s Eve, try to shelter him in a closed place, in the house, in an entrance, in a garage, in a stable. If you still leave him out in the yard, make sure the fence is high enough so he can’t jump over it and if you keep him tied up, make sure the ties are solid so he can’t escape.

Those who have pets at home both on New Year’s Eve and on other days can distract them by slightly raising the volume of the TV and closing the windows so that as little external noise as possible can be heard inside.

During this period, try to guess the time of day when they feel less likely to take the quadruped for a walk. Since the noises are less frequent, try desensitizing him with treats, whether you are indoors or outdoors. For every noise that scares your pet, give him a reward (whether it’s food or a toy he likes) so that he associates that unpleasant noise with something good. Avoid picking him up or acting excessively (carefully) at the time of the noise. This action only makes the animal panic and reinforces the idea that the noise is something serious if it sees that you will panic too. During the winter holidays, if you are closer to pets, use daily food portions as rewards so that frequent rewards given throughout the day are not added to the daily food portion, thus avoiding overfeeding the pet.
During this period, do not leave your dog off the leash for any reason. No matter how trained he is, when he hears a bang he can get scared and run away, risking a car accident or losing her. If you can, place a cage in your home covered with a blanket where he can shelter. Some dogs find refuge in such a place and feel much better in a confined space. If you don’t have a cage, you can improvise a safe place where they can crawl out of beds and chairs.

We recommend a timely visit to the vet who will be able to help you choose which of the supplements dedicated to stress/anxiety is most suitable for your pet.

The quadruped’s preparation for this stressful period begins early, from the beginning of December. On our site there are useful products for this period and beyond. Most supplements to calm your pet, cat or dog can be administered long-term as they are mainly plant-based products. Therefore, as a precaution, you can start taking them from the beginning of December.
