Dog shedding: tips for managing this natural phenomenon

The dog’s fur has the role of maintaining the body temperature in the normal range (38.3 – 39.2 degrees Celsius) and protecting the animal’s skin from the harmful action of the sun or other external factors. The growth process of dog hair is similar to that of humans: when the hair reaches maturity it breaks off and falls out. In the case of animals, this process is also influenced by other factors such as health status, breed, season or living environment. Sometimes the amount of hair shed may seem large, but this is normal for some breeds.

Any dog owner has surely asked himself the question: how much hair should the dog shed?

Newfoundlands, Border Collies, Beagles, Labrador Retrievers or Pekingese tend to shed more and more often, while other breeds (Poodle or Border Terrier) shed a smaller amount of fur. There are some dog breeds that change their coat depending on the season, while others change their coat throughout the year. This process largely depends on the dog’s coat type. There are two types of fur: single-layered and double-layered. For example, a Golden Retriever has a double coat of fur and constantly changes throughout the year.

Dogs that shed seasonally tend to shed more in the fall or spring. This phenomenon is triggered by the biochemical processes of the organism: in spring the texture of the hair changes, becoming finer, thus preparing the animal for the summer, while in autumn it will become more compact and richer to protect the body from the cold.

There are also some causes that underlie excessive shedding. These are:

  • A dog experiencing stress or anxiety may suffer emotional trauma that results in, among other things, hair loss
  • Some skin problems (dermatitis, eczema) lead to hair loss or even the appearance of areas where the skin becomes visible
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Allergies and hormonal fluctuations
  • Infections with various types of fungi
  • Cancer and gastrointestinal problems
  • Some medicines and some types of foods can trigger skin irritation reactions

Types of hair brushes by breed:

Choosing the right brush is very important, especially if your pet tends to shed often.
In this sense, dogs are divided into 2 categories: long-haired and short-haired.

1. Long-haired dogs

In this category we will consider dogs with double-layered fur. This type of hair is made up of an upper layer (coarser hair, with a thicker texture) and a lower layer (made up of fine, soft hair that practically protects the skin). Dogs with this type of coat (Pomeranian, Collie, etc.) need a special brushing tool that can penetrate the fluffy layer and remove loose hair.

The dog needs some time to adapt to this process: you will start brushing at a higher level and then continue with wider movements. The process is repeated until you notice less and less hair in the brush. During heavy shedding periods, you can also use a brush with smaller teeth and a shoe remover. They have different functions but will help you complete the brushing procedure successfully. Brushing must be carried out in the direction of hair growth and in the opposite direction. It is necessary to apply moderate pressure so as not to injure the animal’s skin.

2. Short-haired dogs

Short-haired dogs need specific grooming tools. For example animals of the Beagle or Pug breed give birth more often. To remove the fur you need to use a medium, natural hair brush or even a brush glove. First, brush the fur in the opposite direction of hair growth to pick it up, then brush in the direction of hair growth to remove it. Repeat this process several times to remove all shed hair and evenly distribute the skin’s natural oils into the remaining fur. If using a glove, use a circular motion in the direction of hair growth to clean the fur. Repeat the procedure several times, especially during moulting periods.
Even if it is a short or long-haired dog, excessive shedding is an unpleasant phenomenon. When we choose to adopt or buy an animal we must also take on this aspect. Further attention and effort is needed in terms of managing the moulting process. In parallel with dog grooming, you should also pay attention to the following aspects:

  • the food – the animal may shed excessively if its food does not provide it with sufficient vitamins and minerals. Any deficiency in this sense can have negative repercussions not only on the coat but also on the general state of health of the animal. Choose a high-quality food that has meat as the main ingredient.

  • Lack of some nutrients – Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely important for the health of animals’ skin and coat. Make sure his food contains a sufficient amount, otherwise contact your vet to recommend supplements.
  • An insufficient amount of water – provide your dog with fresh water, especially in summer. Animals tend to get thirsty if they don’t like water. Dehydration leads to hair loss and overdrying.

Before adopting or buying a dog you need to find out about the type of coat and its care needs. Dogs that tend to shed frequently should be brushed daily and bathed several times a week. Even if the animal does its own grooming, it is important to wash and brush it daily, especially during the moulting period.

A visit to the vet is necessary if you notice that your pet is losing more hair than usual. They will help you identify the cause and can recommend the right treatment.
