Types of dog fur and how to care for it

When we talk about the type of fur we mainly refer to the texture, the length and respectively whether it is a single or double layer fur. Particular attention to the diet and a periodic evaluation of the state of health will guarantee a clean and healthy coat.

To maintain a coat with a healthy shine and natural texture, you need to consider the following aspects:

• The diet must be rich in omega-3 and omega-6 acids.

Commercial food usually contains a sufficient percentage of these elements. If you choose a lower quality food for your dog or prefer to cook it at home, you need to add supplements that contain these acids. Constant evaluation of the coat provides clues to the dog’s overall health.

This process will be carried out with caution so as not to unbalance the oils and substances naturally secreted by the skin, which have the role of protecting the animal from the influence of external factors. It is advisable to massage the dog’s fur with a special conditioner at the end of the bath.

One of the most important operations that guarantees the removal of impurities and helps distribute natural oils along the hair.

The difference between hair and fur

Veterinarians and dog breeding specialists emphasize the fact that there is a difference between the notion of fur and hair. What does it really mean when someone talks about the animal’s fur or hair? This difference appears when we refer to a single layer or a double layer. A single layer refers to the hairs that form the first covering of the skin. It can be: silky, rough to the touch, wavy, etc.

By double layer we mean the external layer of hair which is thicker, has the role of protection and the internal layer, which is different, with a thinner and finer consistency. This second layer is also present in birds and grows under the large feathers. Double-coated dog breeds are those adapted to cold environments.

Types of fur and ways of care:

Dog breeds with such hair are: Beagle, Labrador, etc. This is thick, coarser and is recommended to be brushed daily or at least 3-5 times a week. To remove deep dirt, use a normal brush and a special one. It requires special attention during the moulting period.

Periodic trimming and grooming is necessary because the fur grows quickly and the dog may appear unkempt. Brushing must be done daily and a soft, curved brush will be used. It is performed in the opposite direction to hair growth to give volume to the hair. A simple shampoo will be used, without conditioner, so as not to complicate the drying and brushing process.

This is divided into two categories: the long one, for example the Chow-Chow breed, or the short one – Husky. This type of fur is made up of two layers: an internal one, made up of short, dense and soft hair, and another external, short or long, which forms a barrier against water and impurities. Brushing must be done daily and the process is longer. To ensure effective brushing, two types of brushes are needed: a simple one and a rake, as well as a special rubber glove for effective hair removal at the time of shedding.

This can be of two categories. For example, the Maltese breed has a long, thick and fine coat and requires daily brushing, especially during the moulting period. In the case of these dogs it is necessary to use a shampoo that helps detangle the fur and a smooth brush. This type of coat requires a conditioner and drying will be done with the help of a hairdryer, followed by another brushing session after drying.
Curly fur – is specific to Terrier, Schnauzer, etc. breeds. This type of fur requires special attention and is recommended to be entrusted to a specialist. Brushing must be done regularly and a shampoo dedicated to hair with a fascinating texture is necessary.

This category includes Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, etc. breeds. their fur is both short and long in some areas. It is not recommended to cut this type of hair, but to brush it regularly.

A dog’s coat reflects its state of health. A dry, brittle, or extremely oily texture may indicate a health problem. Usually these problems appear when certain vitamins and minerals are missing from the animal’s diet. Sometimes hair can also indicate the presence of imbalances such as thyroid disorders or parasites.
