Which dog breeds are suitable in the apartment or yard

How to enjoy a good life, in your neighborhood or at home, with a dog

Do you live alone on the block and have decided that now is the perfect time to bring a dog into your home? Or perhaps you and your family have decided to enjoy the company of a pet now that you have moved in with a family? Whether you stay in the yard or live your days in an apartment, today’s article can help you with some useful tips for choosing the right dog and with tips to give it a better life, wherever you are!

Follow the advice of most pet owners: you don’t need to have a huge house, a large enclosed space to enjoy a dog. Even if you live in an apartment or smaller home, there are many breeds that will fit into your space and capture your heart.

Don’t rush to the first offer you see online, at the first adoption opportunity, and don’t let the little ones in the family dictate which four-legged friend will fill your days! Why? We must know that buying a dog is an important decision and must be carefully analyzed from all sides. Read, inform yourself, ask for advice, discover the advice of specialists or people around you. As long as we live, we learn!

In the end, after all this assiduous and dedicated work, you will free yourself from many prejudices, fill many empty spaces and be more decisive. You will thus be able to select one of the right dog breeds more quickly (and perhaps even without regrets) and look for a puppy that meets the needs of your family and the environment in which you live.

1. Dog breeds suitable for life at home: the best options

Before any details, we must remember: each dog breed is unique, because each breed was developed for a specific purpose.

In short, almost any breed can be a good backyard dog, however, that choice depends largely on several factors (not just appearance, price, or accessibility).

There really is no “one size fits all dog,” just like there is no one size fits all house, car, or job. So, before buying dogs, weigh all the factors of the situation related to the home and family.

Think realistically about how much time and money you will be able to invest in the family dog in terms of training, grooming, playtime, feeding schedule and maintaining overall health.

But don’t be discouraged: there is a dog suitable for you, even if you are afraid of having defects! There is no perfect place or time, so don’t procrastinate.

I have prepared a list (which unfortunately is by no means a complete list), but I still manage, as much as possible, to highlight some of the most popular breeds.

Remember: You’ll need to consider grooming requirements, activity level, size, and common health conditions when choosing a pet dog for your family.

For the construction site, consider these options

Did you know that this breed was voted the most popular dog in 2015? The reasons are not difficult to understand! Many consider this breed to be the most intelligent and loyal. The Labrador Retriever makes an excellent family dog and has a special ability to get along with children. Additionally, this dog is easy to train and loves spending time with people. When you say Beagle you mean liveliness and intelligence! All in one “small package”, adorable! Thousands of people find them to be an excellent choice because they are low maintenance and make great family dogs. Also, if you are looking for dogs that are good for backyard life and don’t get very big, the Beagle is a great option! Shouldn’t the shepherd be a good, loyal, protective and versatile house dog? Without a doubt! This is precisely why it has been voted the second most popular breed in the world, right after the Labrador Retriever. These animals are good with children and other pets, but are often wary of strangers. Prized for their intelligence, these German Shepherds also make excellent working dogs. They will be happy to do their “work” all day and go home to their family in the evening. Discover one of the most energetic, friendly and loyal breeds. Boxers have long been recognized as one of the best family dogs, especially if you have children. They are low maintenance and require minimal care. Furthermore, they are playful and affectionate with children. However, their health needs to be monitored as they are prone to certain genetic diseases. Suitable as a house dog, he is energetic, courageous and independent. Furthermore, they have many skills and talents. A word of caution: the dachshund is not necessarily the best choice when there are children in the family, as the breed is known to be aggressive at times. Plus, experts say it’s not a good choice for new pet owners. These dogs are depicted as the quintessential family dogs in movies and on TV – just dig a little further back! They are known for their sweet and loving personalities; patience and intelligence. Furthermore, they are the best choice for various services: search and rescue, therapy or comfort dogs. Silent, loyal and weighing up to 90 kg, the Great Dane is the gentle giant of the canine world. But don’t let their massive stature fool you: These king-size dogs are calm and require only a few walks a day once they’re past the puppy stage. Great Danes love children, although they can easily make them fall, perhaps simply by kicking them! They may seem scary on the outside, but on the inside they are kind and warm companions. Keep a cloth handy to wipe away any excess drool that might leak… from their huge heads. Their muscular bodies can push people and objects into tight spaces; keep this in mind if you live in an apartment or smaller house. The Mastiff needs ample living space and obedience training wherever it is found. Commonly used in search and rescue operations but also as service animals, Saint Bernards are huge dogs with an even bigger heart. They tend to be kind, loving and perfect family companions, which is why they get along well with children. Some don’t always realize how big they are, so training is key to keeping them under control.

Dogs to avoid in families with small children?

Specialists warn us: children must be taught how to behave around dogs, at any age. Don’t neglect this aspect and don’t treat it superficially! But what do we do if we can’t tame our children? Then we have to give up and avoid some dog breeds. It’s better not to talk about it either in the discussion or in our house!

These are breeds such as Akitas, Chow Chows and Huskies. Why? These dogs do not tolerate children stepping on them, hitting them, pulling their fur, arguing with them, running around them, shouting and growling. These breeds are more distant and independent. Furthermore, some smaller dogs with strong personalities may not want to be “abused” and provoked by our little ones: here we must include Chihuahua, Pekingese and Shih tzu.

2. Dogs for the apartment: a short list to start from

If you’re an animal lover and live in a small apartment (or studio apartment), we have good news! Your limited space should not exclude you from owning and enjoying the company of a dog.

You don’t have a generous garden! No problem
Luckily we also have the right “motivation”! To know that we were making the right decision and that we were not behaving incorrectly, we followed the advice of dog trainers and other specialists in the field. What do they say, in one form or another? Dogs need time, not space – in other words, that means the time you spend with them matters more than the size of your home or where they live. So, as long as you give your dog enough exercise and keep him mentally active, the dog doesn’t care how big or small your apartment is!

Find the most popular types of dog accessories in the store!

So start with more courage in your search for the right dog to keep you company in a small apartment!

The “filtering” begins, starting with small apartment dogs. Then you will also see the medium options, and eventually you will be surprised to discover the large size variants too!

Small apartment dogs
Why do small dogs make great pets? The answer is simple: they don’t take up much space, they can usually move and play inside; they are easy to lift and carry if necessary. However, as I said above, some small dogs are not recommended for families with children! So size isn’t the only indicator of whether a dog will do well in tight spaces. Also focus on the dog’s personality!
So, take into account his needs and your style, as a family. Which small dog breeds are the best apartment dogs? Below are a few you can check out to get started.

1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
These dogs are friendly with people and other dogs, so they are perfect for the block and their size is suitable for a small-scale space.
2. Hound
Many owners are adamant that these large, lean dogs are perfect for apartments, as they only need a little space and like to get a little exercise… to which they add plenty of sleep during the day.
3. French Bulldog
French Bulldogs are bred to be smaller than their Bulldog cousins, so they are suitable for an apartment (although both breeds are worth considering). They have short hair that doesn’t need much maintenance and they love to hang around the house – moreover, they are like funny clowns, who bring a lot of fun to those around them.
4. Yorkshire Terriers
If you are looking for a small, lively, affectionate dog with a strong personality, then a Yorkshire Terrier could be the perfect solution. These four-legged friends have been reliable companions since Victorian times and their popularity has not waned to this day. Their energy can be used up on daily walks and they require little maintenance: the low dispersion means you won’t have to constantly vacuum dog hair from the floor or furniture!

Tips for living in an apartment with a dog

– Create a daily rhythm (food, walks, play, etc.). Routine is beneficial for both animals and us, as humans, at any age.
– If possible, keep a female and a male together, in the same apartments – not only for breeding reasons, but above all to balance the reactions and way of adapting to apartment life.
– Try to limit dogs’ access to the bedroom or other parts of the house that are strictly related to our hygiene. Also, wash the pet’s paws or body with a suitable shampoo. Pay attention to the frequency of their baths!
– Just as we are advised to enjoy the open air, the sun, movement in nature… and dogs must enjoy these things. Otherwise we risk more frequent medical visits.
– Allow the dog to get to know the apartment, the condominium, the people in the area at his own pace and to create strong, lasting and deep relationships with all members of the family.
