How to take care of your cat: 5 tips and recommendations

Love for animals is based on respect for nature. Our actions are based on thoughts and beliefs. When we choose to take care of an animal we must answer some questions such as:

  • Am I willing to take on everything that comes with his care (costs, living space, vet visits, medical care)?
  • What are the reasons for wanting a pet?

The answers to these questions are especially important before making the decision to purchase or adopt an animal.

We usually choose based on emotions what is attractive in terms of appearance. The cat is an animal that expresses delicacy and elegance. The smaller it is, the cuter and funnier it is. With its playful personality and affectionate behavior, the cat can be considered the ideal pet.
We can demonstrate affection and love for the animal when we provide it with optimal living conditions, access to quality food and care. Even though the cat is an animal that easily adapts to the environment in which it lives, it is necessary to consider some details that will help it to fully enjoy life with you.

So here are the important aspects to consider to offer the best life to your non-speaking friend:

1. Waste box

The space around the litter box is very important for the cat’s comfort. Cats instinctively choose space for elimination. It can easily be observed that these animals select certain locations depending on the way they perceive their respective spaces. In this sense, you can choose a tray or litter tray with a particular shape at a shop with products dedicated to pets. Even a simple plastic box can be transformed into a litter box.

Observe the cat and try to detect its signals. Cats need more generous space, which is why you need to buy a larger litter box (in terms of surface area, not height). Give the pet time to get used to his favorite places in the house. Cats don’t like rapid changes.

Tips to help your cat get into the habit of using the litter box:

  • Place the box in a quiet place where the cat will not be disturbed by other people, noises or other animals.
  • Change the sand every day and clean the litter box weekly. Your cat appreciates a clean litter box. Do not use products that contain excess perfume or other chemicals. These can have a negative effect and the cat may move away from the litter box.
  • If you have 2 or more cats you need to purchase more litter. Sometimes animals place themselves in hierarchies and if one cat is dominant it can intimidate others. Provide enough boxes and place them in different areas of the house.
  • Take into account the age of the animal: elderly cats may have movement problems and it is necessary to purchase them a litter box of medium height, easily accessible or adjustable.

2. A pole dedicated to sharpening gerutes

In the natural environment, the cat uses its instincts to satisfy its basic needs. Sharpening the claws by scratching is part of the cat’s behavior and it is not possible to train him in this sense. There are some objects specifically designed to be used in this sense by the animal that lives next to you. There are different types of products dedicated to sharpening claws: some can be placed on flat surfaces, others can be suspended. Always check the instructions regarding the installation of such an item. As much as possible, avoid hanging or tilting the furniture to install it as this can cause injury to people and/or other pets. This post will give the cat the space it needs to satisfy its needs and will prevent it from scratching the furniture or other objects in the house. This way you will provide the cat with a comfortable environment and he will feel relaxed and happy.

3. Quality food

Choose a good brand of cat food. Quality food helps your cat enjoy optimal health. Like other animals, cats have specific nutritional needs. Felines are carnivores, which means they need quality protein to avoid health problems. Some products on the market contain low-quality ingredients that do not provide enough nutrients to keep your cat healthy. Select only that food made from beef, chicken, turkey or fish, important amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids. Avoid giving your cat food intended for human consumption. Keep in mind that some foods are even toxic to cats (e.g. chocolate).

4. Grooming and brushing the fur

Fur care largely depends on its characteristics and texture. Although cats are used to taking care of themselves, extra attention is needed from you when it comes to grooming. Long-haired cats need a bath several times a week, while short-haired cats need a bath once a week. Periodic grooming helps keep the animal in optimal condition and will avoid situations in which the cat could ingest hairballs. When brushing your pet you can easily detect the presence of fleas, parasites or other skin problems such as swelling, redness, etc. If you notice anything suspicious you should notify your vet.
Follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding pet grooming as well as his advice regarding the purchase of specific products.

5. Sterilization of the cat

This procedure offers numerous benefits to the cat, regardless of gender. Neutering will reduce unpleasant pet behaviors such as urine spraying, and spaying prevents excessive breeding. Veterinarians recommend sterilizing within 2-6 months.

Some gestures performed by the owner have the ability to help the animal enjoy health and happiness. His life largely depends on how he is cared for and fed. That’s why you need to pay attention to your cat’s needs and offer him what he needs for a balanced life.
